Educational Projects

We work with schools and universities to run projects that explore working in response to local contexts.

Palace of Varieties
with UAL Camberwell BA Illustration, 2022

Palace of Varieties was a unit in which over 100 BA Illustration students at UAL Camberwell developed interactive projects for a public event at Peckham Levels.

We worked with the students over 3 weeks to develop individual projects that responded to the local context of Peckham. From giant dandelion sculptures, to fictional bands, to portrait stations, to puppet shows, games, performances, zine sales and everything in between – each project paid particular attention to audience interaction and the context in which it was being exhibited.

The students worked together to curate, promote, coordinate and deliver the showcase. The event was full of amazing energy and the students were able to really see how their projects were received by local audiences. It was a day to be proud of!

Brief Encounters
with Kingston School of Art BA Illustration Animation, 2021 and 2022

For the last 2 years, we’ve organised a project called Brief Encounters for the BA Illustration Animation course at KSA. The project links students up with nearby organisations (schools, charities, the local council, etc) and allows them to practise applying their skills to local contexts. The organisations set briefs for the students – some briefs ask for speculative ideas, others ask for small pieces of finished work – and over 3 weeks the students respond to the briefs and then present their projects to the organisations.

Through Brief Encounters, students have the opportunity to test out their methodologies and get a sense of how they might work with clients/collaborators when they leave university. The project also opens up important conversations around ‘dream jobs’ and the contexts/sectors that each student sees as being the most exciting to them.

Thank you to all the students, staff and partner organisations that have brought such good, explorative energy to Brief Encounters over the years.

Mural Project
with University Academy of Engineering South Bank, 2021

We worked with painters Tom Scotcher and Rodrigo Domingoes to run a mural project at UAE, a secondary school in Walworth. We ran 2 active design workshops with year 8 students and played around with ideas for the mural, which the school wanted to reflect the personalities of the students. In one of the workshops, an impromptu dance-off happened and we all agreed that it would make a great scene for the mural – and that was that!
